Michael: I know there is no way you could possibly
know the story behind the Barrel House story, but here
it is in brief.

The owner was a victim of a scam. A person posing as
an employee of a liquor distributor (had the
stationary and everything) came in and announced he
would be the contact for the distributor from here on
out. Thinking this guy was legit, the owner of the
Barrel House bought from him. Long story short, this
fellow was dealing in stolen goods. The Barrel House
cooperated fully with police in the investigation, and
agreed to a stipulated settlement of the case. Mr.
Woodson, who chairs the ABC Board, nevertheless
decided to close Barrel House for two weeks because
the owner did not appear before the Board with
counsel. Barrel House is now open, and the Logan
Circle community is happy to support this business
going forward.

Fusebox is pleased to announce its upcoming
exhibitions: 1:00 pm: Patrick Wilson in our main
exhibition space; and a new video installation by
Susan Smith-Pinelo in our project space. The
exhibitions open April 26 and will run through May 31,
2003. A reception for the artists will be held
Saturday, April 26, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

Patrick Wilson will present new paintings that
merge the sublime light and urban iconography of his
native Los Angeles. The central piece of the
exhibition, Three Weeks, will be a 21-panel
installation of paintings that traverse the color
spectrum, making implicit reference to the passage of
time.
Shrouded within each piece murmur time and memory.
Each presents a synapse of an urban view from a
distant vista: a dumpster, perhaps, a trailer, a shed,
platforms or cranes, some sort of loading dock door;
other things too dim to recognize. So too reside signs
or symbols of buildings: pinstripes of solid color,
sometimes two adjacent, sometimes hidden along a false
edge of the canvas, stretch to the sky, solo or in
tandem. These lines intimate verticality and show
simultaneously the co-existence of something painted-
as-seen and something pared to its essentials: hue and
a vector of direction…Each piece presents a fading in
and out of view visually-against a murk of haze-and a
fading in and out of view conceptually,
representational versus reductive.
Patrick Wilson received his M.F.A. from Claremont
and lives and works in Los Angeles. He has had recent
solo exhibitions at Susanne Vielmetter in Los Angeles,
and Brian Gross Fine Art in San Francisco. Patrick’s
work has also been included in group exhibitions at
Feigen Contemporary in New York, and The Riverside Art
Museum and The Long Beach Museum in California. His
work is also included in the Edythe and Eli Broad
Collection.

Susan Smith-Pinelo presents the third and final
installment in the Hiphopcrisy Series, continuing her
exploration of hip hop culture and its impact on
women, men and society. Through her videos, Smith-
Pinelo addresses the notion of female identity within
the complex, sometimes misogynistic world of hip-hop.
She has garnered critical attention for her work in
two acclaimed group exhibitions: Sometimes (1999)
appeared in the 2001 Freestyle show at the Studio
Museum in Harlem, then traveled to the Santa Monica
Museum; and Cake (2001), which was shown in One Planet
Under a Groove (2002) at the Bronx Museum of the Arts
and the Walker Art Center. Her most recent works,
Asstronomical Proportions I & II (2002), the first two
installments of the Hiphopcrisy Series, were included
in the recent Corcoran Biennial at the Corcoran
Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.

12-8 pm.
