DCCA Will Coordinate Fund Raising for Victims of 21st
Street House Fire
DCCA will coordinate a community fund-raising effort
to provide financial assistance to the seven survivors
of the January 15 house fire at 1617 21st Street NW.
The house was totally destroyed, and the seven
survivors, among them college students and other young
single persons living on limited incomes, lost all of
their belongings. An eighth occupant of the house died
from burns two days after the fire. Residents have
expressed dismay and outrage over an estimated 40-
minute delay in getting emergency assistance to the
scene because of problems with the city's 911
communications system.
Neighbors have decided to undertake a community
fund-raising effort to help the survivors replace
clothing and other possessions. None of the occupants
was insured.
The Phillips Collection, which is located across
the street, will hold a fund raising event at the
gallery next Tuesday, February 25, starting at 6 p.m.
DCCA will serve as a collection point for donations,
and at the fundraiser, funds collected by February 25
will be distributed equally among the seven survivors.
Checks, identified for the 21st Street Fire
Survivors, should be sent to DCCA Treasurer Peter
Luciano, 1744 Riggs Place NW, Washington, DC 20009.
