RE: FARMERS MARKET

Okay, I just called the folks at the Community Harvest
and got the scoop.

The plan for the Columbia Heights Farmers market is to
use the parcel at the SW corner of 14th and Irving.
This site is not due to be developed for *at least* 3
years, so in the meantime, a coalition of local
"greening" orgs has gotten together with Jim Graham to
get permission to use the spot for a community
farmer's market. The effort is formally called the
"Columbia Heights Community Marketplace" and will
hopefully attract not only the farms (they already
have 3 contracted) but also artists, local vendors,
and performers.

Their next general meeting is March 27th at 7-8:30 pm
in the Josephine Butler Park Center (2437 15th St).
They are also having a meeting on March 20th at 7 pm
of people who are interested in helping with
"designing" the space and working on the re-greening.
This meeting would be great for any people involved in
landscaping, design, or gardening who want to lend
their expertise. The contact for these meetings is
Constance Newman (694-5598).

They are also accepting donations to pay for things
like banners, signs, ads, and hopefully, an organizer.
Checks can be sent to Friends of Columbia Heights
Community Marketplace c/o Washington Parks and People,
2437 15th St NW, Washington, DC 20009. Hope this is
helpful info!

The Austin Center needs your help! On Wednesday,
April 11, we will be launching our Bon Voyage
Traveling Doll Project. I'll include a sample letter
below, but here's a brief description:

We have been busy making one dozen cloth dolls (very
beautiful, I might add) here at the Austin Center this
semester. And we'd like to send them off to see the
world. That's where you come in: are any of you
going to be traveling in mid-April? If you are and
would be willing to a.) attend our Bon Voyage Party at
2 p.m. on April 11, and b.) take one of our dolls on
your trip, let us know!

Each doll has a different personality, look and
history. Luonnatar, Tenisha, DeWayne, Robert, Iesha,
Blimey, and six others are getting ready for their
trips and would love to meet you. So let me know if
you're available to take one of our lovelies
traveling!

Thanks,
Katy

Sample Letter:

April 11, 2001

Dear Traveler,

Hello! My name is Francie, and I'm part of the Austin
Center Traveling Doll Project.

The Austin Center for Health and Living is a day
treatment program for people living with HIV/AIDS.
We're part of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, which serves
the majority of people living with HIV disease in
Washington, D.C. The Center provides medical and
psychosocial treatment in a supportive community
environment.

The Austin Center clients have entrusted you with the
responsibility of helping me to see the world and to
report on my whereabouts and well-being.

Here's the scoop: I want to make sure my friends at
the Austin Center hear from me during my travels, so I
am hoping that you will help me write a letter to them
from whatever exciting place you and I find ourselves
in. The letter should be written to:

The Fabulous Men and Women of the Austin Center
   Whitman-Walker Clinic
   1407 S Street, NW
   Washington, D.C. 20009

I'd appreciate it if you would mention where we are,
and please describe how you met me and any adventures
I may have had since being in your possession. Of
course, the letter should be signed from me, Francie,
but my friends will wonder who you are, too, so make
sure you let them know a little bit about yourself.

A little bit about me: I am a college student
majoring in library science. I love to read all types
of books, particularly biographies, mysteries, and
(blush) the occasional romance novel. I love outdoor
activities and all sports, with hiking and soccer
being two of my favorite things to do. If you can
describe any of the local sports, outdoor scenes, or
books people are reading in the letter you help me to
write, that would be great. Oh, and in case you're
wondering about my personality (that is, if I'm not
too chatty when you meet me), I am very pleasant but
sometimes shy.

I have one more favor to ask of you. After we have
spent some time together, please give me to another
person who promises to take good care of me and write
a letter to my friends back at the Austin Center. I
want to visit as many places and meet as many people
as possible. Also, I should let you know that I'm
expected home by December 1, 2001. So if you meet me
around that time, I would appreciate being sent home
to my friends back at the Austin Center.

Thanks for all your help with this project.

Sincerely,
Francie

P.S. Photographs of me while traveling are always
welcome and don't have to be sent with the letter you
are going to help me write. I realize it takes a
while to get film developed!

Subject: FW: Urban Forest Council grants

Grant Funds: Deadline April 6, 2001

The Urban Forest Council invites applications for new
grant-funded urban forest planting projects to start
this spring.

We are particularly interested in supporting projects
that create pocket parks and mini-forests. Planting
projects must be publicly accessible. Projects must
include trees and shrubs and we require an educational

element that can make the project a model for others
and serve as a teaching tool.

We look for projects that promote community
involvement in urban forestry through a neighborhood
association, school, or church, and involves
volunteers. We look for organizations that can commit
to maintaining the planting.

If you would like to apply for grant money for an
urban forest project come to our quarterly meeting on
March 24, or contact us by calling 202-216-0900 and
leave your address information, or write to us at 405
K. Street NW WDC 20001, or go online to our to
 and download the application.

The deadline is April 6, 2001 and awards will be
announced April 23, 2001. Technical support for those
who want to submit grants will be provided one-on-one.
