11/6/00:
The mayor gave a terrific speech last Thursday at the
National Building Museum for WABA. He promised that
the city would stripe 10 miles of bike lanes each year
for the next five years. He promised to add 100 bike
racks each year for the next 5 years (incl. bike racks
in front of all city buildings). He wrote a letter to
the NPS urging them to consider experimenting with
closing Beach Drive to cars (but wants more
neighborhood input). He said the city will take a step
towards completing the Metropolitan Branch Trail next
year by making a few blocks on 1st and 2nd Sts NE
official. He's asked the MPD to start keeping track
of bicycle accidents (wear those helmets!). He will
hire a bicycle coordinator for the city and will
revamp the bicycle signage and redo a citywide bicycle
map (and make it available online). And, most
surprisingly, he said that he wants DC to host an
international bike race! All this, plus he also
mentioned efforts to build a trail system on both
sides of the Anacostia, much of which should be
complete within 5 years.
The waterfront park in Georgetown (along Water St;
below the elevated expressway) has taken a giant step
closer to finalization: the city has removed all of
its trucks and storage items. There is a very wide
swath of asphalt smack next to the water which is part
of the bike trail system. The land officially now
belongs to the NPS; expect it to be landscaped soon.

open in the basement of the old Circle bar, using half
of the basement. The rooftop lounge is being developed
in part by owners of Chi-Cha. A restaurant will be on
the ground floor, and it should all open early next
year. Club Monaco (at Conn & S) will open by the end
of this year.
