10/2 - 13/00:
Urban Essentials is now open on U St between 13th and
14th. It's absolutely amazing - you must invite your
friends and visit this beautiful shop. Lots of high-
quality, nicely-designed furniture for living rooms
and bedrooms.
That forever-abandoned 4-story building on U St, just
east of 18th St, is finally going to go through a
complete renovation, being turned back into 12
apartments by a reputable local firm. (See
http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2000/10/02/story8.html)
Sparky's Espresso Cafe is coming soon to 14th St, just
south of Dogs by Day. It's being built by the same guy
who's been renovating the Elizabeth Taylor WW Clinic
across the street. Meanwhile, the dumpy deli between
the Black Cat and Source Theatre is closed during its
transformation into new restaurant named El Camino
Real.
Expect Cobalt to re-open around Dec 1, with a
restaurant on the lower level, a "private club" above,
and the reborn bar on the 3rd and 4th floors. Lammas
has closed due to poor sales (due to...). Meanwhile,
next door Universal Gear has finished their first-
floor expansion.
Restaurant being built in former Circle bar on Conn
Ave will feature Andean food. The south half of
Harlow's is now open as a hair salon, while Comfort
One shoes will be moving into the north half from
their current location a few doors up.
19th & M will be home to a slew of new restaurants,
including Penang Malaysian Cuisine, Le Jardin (a
French bistro), Chipotle Mexican Grill, and, of
course, we're getting another Starbucks there. (see
http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2000/09/25/newscolumn7.html)
Mediterrean Blue (18th St) is gone. In its place is
Nineteen Ten (see
http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2000/10/02/newscolumn6.html).
AmeriSuites Hotel will be built on 14th south of
Thomas Circle, on parking lot next to Holiday Inn
Downtown. See
http://www.bizjournals.com/washington/stories/2000/09/04/story5.html
Home Depot has decided against old Sears space, but
appears headed towards new plaza near Rhode Island Ave
Metro stop with K-Mart and Giant.
DCCA is giving out Free tulips at their next meeting,
first Monday of November. See

I'm (a) super, thanks for asking (as the South Park
song goes...) The Washington Opera is desparate for
MEN (who isn't?) to be supernumeraries, that is,
people to just stand on stage without singing, talking
or dancing (I do get to push around a few peasants).
See below if interested...
Don't forget about Reel Affirmations, now happening...
Best regards

Hello. The District of Columbia Aquatics Club (DCAC),
D.C.'s very own homosexual swim team with a few
lesbians and straight people thrown in, is hosting its
annual swim meet this weekend (October 7) out in the
suburbs. If you can volunteer, it would be greatly
appreciated. Most of the work involves standing
behind men in Speedos and clicking on a stopwatch when
the gun goes bang and clicking again when the guy in
the Speedo touches the wall. Plus, I am hosting a
dinner party that night for a few swimmers from out of
town, a few swim team buddies from DCAC and friends
who volunteer. Let Becky (whose contact info appears
below) AND me know if you would like to help out.
Muchas gracias.
Here is the message from the volunteer coordinator:
Yes, timing IS everything, so it's not too late to
volunteer to time at the DC Aquatics Club Annual
Columbus Day Classic 2000 swim meet this Saturday,
October 7th! No experience necessary! On the job
training will be provided! Who else but DCAC gives you
the opportunity to work up close with moist, athletic,
scantily clad bodies??!! Shifts are short: 9am -
12:30pm or 12:30pm - 4pm. Timers, please show up at
least 15 minutes before your shift to learn the ropes
and get your lane assignment. Other volunteer
opportunities include T-shirt sales and awards table.
The meet is at a brand new venue: the Prince George's
County Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff
Road in Maryland. Directions: Take I-495 to exit 17B
(MD 202/Landover Rd. West). Go to first intersection
and turn Left onto Brightseat Rd (towards FedEx
Field). At next light, turn Right onto Sheriff Rd.
Turn Left into Complex driveway at the intersection
with Harvey Drive.
Those interested in volunteering - contact Becky
Halbe, our volunteer coordinator at
halber@bellatlantic.net. Or call her at 703/532-7519.

The Washington Opera is desperately in need of
supernumeraries, men and women but especially
(young-ish) men, for the production of Massenet’s
"Don Quichotte" (with Ruggero Raimondi and Denyce
Graves). PLEASE let everyone know - spouses, friends,
neighbors, students, strangers......
The schedule is demanding (usually 7 - 10 pm, almost
every night until opening night October 21st), and the
pay is close to nothing ($40 for each performance; $20
for rehearsals). Must be willing to do it for the
"thrill of being on stage."
If interested, call the super coordinator, Jennifer
Johnston, at 202/437-0782 ASAP; or the Kennedy Center
at 295-2423, ext. 6.

First Annual Dupont Circle Festival
October 14 and 15
Celebrate the Circle!
Washington, DC, September 13, 2000 - The Dupont Circle
Citizens Association (DCCA) and American Farmland
Trust’s Freshfarm Market are sponsoring the first ever
Dupont Circle Festival. This event is to celebrate
this well-loved off-the-mall community and to raise
funds for the “greening” of the neighborhood. On
Saturday, October 14, the First Annual Dupont Circle
Cocktail Party and Silent Auction will take place at
the stately Carnegie Institution of Washington -- a
historic, neoclassical building at the corner of 16th
and P Streets, NW. Auction items include original
works of fine art, theatre tickets, restaurant and
retail gift certificates, a museum tour, spa
treatments, and much more. Live entertainment from
American Song, whose repertoire runs the gamut of R &
B, vintage country, pop, rock, and roots music, will
provide spirited musical entertainment. In addition,
Michael Green, senior partner at GrapeFinds, will run
a wine tasting program. The proceeds from the silent
auction will go to planting trees in both residential
and commercial street tree boxes in the Dupont Circle
neighborhood. A preview of auction items will take
place from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. with bidding from 7 p.m. -
9 p.m. Local restaurants will provide hors d’oeuvres,
and a cash bar will be available. The cost of tickets
for the fundraiser is $30 in advance, $35 at the door.
To find out where to purchase tickets during the week,
call DCCA at (202) 265-3222. Tickets can be purchased
on Sundays at the Freshfarm Market at Dupont Circle
and at Axis Hair Salon at 1509 Connecticut Avenue, NW.
In addition, the Galleries of Dupont Circle will be
open on Saturday, October 14, and many will feature
special events. The Galleries of Dupont Circle is a
consortium of local art galleries located on
Connecticut Avenue, R Street, 22nd Street, Hillyer
Court, 21st Street, and Q Street. Selected galleries
in the area will also be open on Sunday, October 15
from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. A highlight of the weekend will
be the 33rd annual Dupont Circle Citizens Association
House Tour Sunday, October 15 from noon – 5 p.m. On
Saturday, October 14, The Phillips Collection will
offer reduced admissions to the permanent collections
as well as two special walk-in programs for adults and
children. A gallery talk for adults, Renoir’s Luncheon
of the Boating Party, occurs at 10:30 a.m. and
repeated at 11:30 a.m. A family tour, Art of the City,
for children (6 - 10) accompanied by an adult will
take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
On Sunday, October 15, American Farmland Trust’s
Freshfarm Market at Dupont Circle will sponsor live
entertainment from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The entertainment
will include an a cappella group, a jazz ensemble, and
dance performances such as hip-hop and flamenco. At 11
a.m. on Sunday morning, representatives from the
Mayor’s office, DCCA, and American Farmland Trust will
perform a tree planting ceremony on 20th Street by the
Riggs Bank at Dupont Circle.
“The first annual Dupont Circle Festival is an
outstanding way to highlight all this diverse
neighborhood has to offer – art, music, shopping and
dining. The funds earned from this event to plant much
needed new trees will help to make the area more
attractive and environmentally sound,” said Frank
Hornstein, President of the Dupont Circle Citizens
Association.
