8/7/00:
Mayor's Neighborhood Action initiative has placed
1100-1300 blocks of U St on initial list of Ward 1
"chronic areas," due to traffic congestion, DWI/DUI,
rats, fire code violations, overcrowding and
disorderly conduct.
Home Rule (14th & S) will be expanding their inventory
to include cards and stationary.
Whitman-Walker is selling two rowhouse buildings on
14th St, SW corner of S St, south of Mario's.
Interested? Call WW's property manager.

school. Former Redskin George (or is it Ray?) Stark
is helping disadvantaged kids learn a trade.
New antique store opening in a few weeks (must pass
code inspection) - "Antiques by Richard Woods," at
1457 Church St.
Visited Haute (P St near 14th) for first time this
weekend and was highly impressed - it's tiny but the
owner is super-friendly (and cute). Expensive clothing
but worth a peek. This is the same guy who had the
Take 2 store on 18th St...
Barnes & Noble has put in a bid to Jim Abdo for the
fish market at 14th & P.
7-11 at 14th & Rhode Island is headed towards becoming
a Carribou Coffee, a woodsier version of Starbucks

Be sure to visit new Ginko Gardens space in Capitol
Hill, on 11th St. Why can't we have a garden shop on
14th? (Say, at the closed-down Amaco station?)
New hair salon being opened by former Harlow's
stylist, in former "Sybil the Pig and the Orchid"
space in basement unit on R St, east of 17th St. (Yes,
Harlow's has closed.)

CSNA Members and Neighbors!
I will be holding a Greater U Street Historic District
Review Meeting on Thursday night at 7:30 pm, August
10th at the Saloon at 1207 U Street. THIS IS AN
IMPORTANT MEETING TO DISCUSS LONG TERM PLANNING
STRATEGY FOR THE U STREET CORRIDOR. Note that CSNA
does not meet in the month of August.
The Historic Preservation Review Board also does not
meet that month, but we need to discuss major and
current projects proposed for our District along the U
Street corridor, as well as formulate future plans for
the area as many of you have suggested. I will have on
hand a map of the area with current vacant lots within
the Historic District to discuss a more long range
plan and discussion on the area.
SPECIAL guests invited include Tersh Boasberg,
Chairman of the Historic Preservation Review Board,
and Ward One Councilman Jim Graham. After our meeting
to discuss future proactive planning for the U Street
Corridor, I have invited representatives from
Donatelli & Klein and Metropolis Development to be on
hand to provide updates, new drawings, and models of
their respective proposals for a 56 condominium
complex at 14th and V Streets, and a proposed 200 unit
apartment complex at 13th and U Street.
Hope you can make it!

REMINDER: ANC ELECTION THIS YEAR; PETITIONS AVAILABLE
AUGUST 9
All ANC seats are up for re-election this November.
The first step in running for the ANC is picking up
petitions at the Board of Elections, 1 Judiciary
Square, Room 250N. Petitions will be available
beginning August 9. To qualify for the ballot,
candidates must collect the signatures of at least 25
registered voters in their SMDs, and deliver the
signatures to the Board by September 8. The ANC term
begins in early January and runs for two years.
Contact the Board of Elections at 727-2525 if you have
questions about running for ANC.
It would be useful, if commissioners who know that
they will not be running would state or post it. A
person who would not run against an incumbent may
consider running if the seat were to be vacant. For
example 1B02, 1E06; 1A02; and 1C09 all have incumbents
that aren't running again or are currently vacant.

given four weeks to work on a project within the

invited professionals in architecture, community
organizing and development.

founded in 1998, works collaboratively with the Manna
Community Development Corporation and the National
