7/25/00:

Legendary west-coast gay-friendly hangout Hamburger
Mary's is coming to 14th & Rhode Island, 2 doors south
of Barrel House Liquor (SE corner). The legendary
restaurant (and Bloody Mary's bar) has franchised, and
a local guy bought the rights for DC. Opening might
be around November. I've been to Mary's in Hawaii and
San Diego and loved both of 'em.

Old black Masonic lodge at 1438 U St is being
transformed into a fancy restaurant.

The old Sears/Hechinger's building in Tenleytown will
be become a Home Depot, IF they're granted permission
for major interior renovations, and they'll probably
want to build on top of the building as well. First
public forum July 25 at 7:30 in the building
(tonight!).

Cafe Japone expanding into street-level space at P &
21st, formerly home to Sophia's.

Construction on 1600 block of Conn Ave is replacing
underground gas lines. "Routine maintenance,"
according to Pepco.

Former Dunkin' Donuts on U St being converted into
"Twenty-Four Seven," a "Mediterranean Coffee Cafe."
(next-door Julie's Empanadas will open soon in old
Baskin-Robbins spot)

Fresh Fields' opening date pushed back to December.
Staffing process begins in September, if you're
interested!

Visions opening pushed back to August 18. See

Next time you're in Georgetown, wander over to 3008 Q
St. to visit Sara's Market, which opened in February.
This is a unique little convenience store in the
middle of a residential neighborhood. The front
window is adorable, and the simple interior has wooden
shelves and a nice selection (only the bad lighting
detracts). Once upon a time, stores like this were
never more than 4 blocks away (I had one a few doors
down growing up). Wouldn't it be great to have one
like it hidden in Dupont Circle (like, say, at 16th &
T). Calling all entrepreneurs!

Screen on the Green, outdoor movies at Washington
monument's base, continues next Monday, when the movie
will be The Philadelphia Story . See http://articles.citysearch.com/New_York/sog/dc_index.html

33rd annual DCCA house tour will be October 15, along
the 19th Street corridor, with the tea on R St's Intl
Student House. Note boycott being held due to DCCA's
actions against JR's expansion.
