4/3/00:
Food news: Tryst owners plan a late-night diner at
2453 18th st (now an auto parts store, a few doors
south of Tryst). San Marzano - a cool pizza joint - is
coming to G'town (3282 M) and is considering Dupont -
please come! G'town could also get its own Marvellous
Market. Alberto's is leaving current P St spot by
Fresh Fields to the 2100 block of P. Jim Abdo now owns
7-11 at 14th & Rhode Island and hopes to turn it into
an outdoor cafe. Owners of Luna & Skewers will open
new rest. in new Residence Inn on P - to be called
Mimi's. Minneapolis-based Caribou Coffee is actively
searching for locations in the D.C. area - tell them
to open on U St/14th! (see
http://www.caribou-coffee.com/main.cfm)
Uptown Bakers will renovate an old Ace Hardware store
in NE DC and open a 19,000-sq.ft., 24-hour production
facility, more than tripling the size of its two
current locations combined. (from WBJ)
Shopping news: In addition to the 4-story flagship
Borders coming to 14th & F (sharing the old
Garfinkle's spot with new American cuisine rest.
"Butterfield 9"), and the Barnes & Noble coming to
12th & E, Borders will have another store in the yet-
to-be-built Gallery Place, on H & 7th. Filene's Dupont
location will re-open this month. Bethesda is getting
an Expo Design Center in its old Hechinger site.
NoMa is inching towards reality with the signing of
Enron Broadband (though it's mostly comm. equipment
and not people, it does help the techy-reputation of
NoMa).
From DCCAAlrt: The effect of the Dupont Circle CORE
area is that "anyone arrested within a 5 block radius
of the circle and order[ed] by the Courts as part of
their release to stay away from the circle, they can
be arrested for merely being in the designated CORE
area while the case is pending." [ed. note: the
actual border area is not actually a 5-block radius]
Burglaries for March 2000 were down 12.5 % from March
99. Robberies remained the same (7 per month), and
theft from autos went down 65%.
Paul Williams reports (via CSNA) that "the U Street
Historic District Review Committee will have a meeting
next Tuesday, April 11 at 8 pm at the Saloon (1207 U
Street), to review two fairly large projects currently
up for review for the April HP Review Board; new
condo/apartment in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue,
and a parking schematic. All are welcome to attend!"
Paul also reports the following:
"The Liquor Store at the corner of 12th and U Street
that has been a source of problems for so long was
closed by the owner of the building (Mike Noorishad
from Mike's Chicken at 1110 U Street) and will be
cleaned out soon. We all owe Mike a big thanks, so
stop by tonight for some chicken and say thanks! His
efforts will single-handedly clean up the vagrants and
panhandlers that used that corner and the store."
